Mid-April Newsletter – Guide to Fleas, Ticks and Your Dog

The first report of ticks came into the store on Saturday, so it turns out my plan for writing about flea and tick protection is very timely. I apologize for the length of this article—I hope there’s information here you find useful. First, fleas and ticks—especially ticks—carry diseases that can kill your dog, or at the very least make its life miserable: Lyme disease, Erlichiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Tularemia, etc. They can kill YOU, too, or make your life miserable. So, control these pests! About Ticks Ticks are pests that feed on the blood of animals and humans. The most common types are the deer tick (Black-legged tick), and the American dog tick. Most are reddish-brown to brown in appearance and have eight legs. Ticks are most likely to be seen in the warmer months (Spring through Fall) and they live in wooded, bushy and grassy areas. Learn more about what ticks look like at their different life stages here: http://www.tickencounter.org/tick_identification About Fleas Similar to ticks, fleas are small pests that feed on the blood of animals (and even humans). Fleas are a nuisance to pets as well as dangerous because they can transmit tapeworms and other diseases, and in extreme circumstances can cause anemia. Fleas breed very quickly and can spread not just on your pets, but in various stages in your carpets, furniture, even bedding! Fleas can be picked up anywhere outside, and since females can lay 40-50 eggs a day, an infestation can happen in a matter of days. Products the Kill, Repel or Prevent Fleas and Ticks You might want to consider natural or non-chemical options if you are not afraid to touch fleas or ticks. I’m not squeamish about [...]

February Newsletter

Pet Dental Health Month and a Whole Lot More Nature’s Logic is a fairly new brand—less than 10 years old.  I wish more people knew about it and appreciated its uniqueness in the dry dog food realm.  Nature’s Logic is the only kibble made entirely without synthetic vitamin additives.  To do that requires extensive nutritional research and some “interesting” ingredients—e.g., plasma, almonds, alfalfa, cheese.  But it means getting nutrition from whole food sources, and avoids vitamin-mineral packs of unknown origin:  both good things.  It does contain grain, but that grain is millet, which is gluten-free, has a low glycemic index, and is easily digested (for those sensitive stomachs).  In addition, millet has been shown to have some prebiotic action (feeding the good bacteria in the gut) and antioxidant properties. To encourage you to try Nature’s Logic dry dog food, we’re offering $2 off a 4.4-lb. bag and $4 off a 15.4-lb. bag during the month of February. Pet Dental Health Month – 10% off everything dental Boy! am I celebrating dental health month.  Schnauzers have notoriously bad teeth and mine are no exception.  Bad teeth can translate to bad health in other parts of the body as inflammation from tooth decay travels around the body.  Brush, brush, brush! Through the end of February, all toothpaste and gel, all toothbrushes, Breath-less Plaque Zapper drinking water treatment, and Whimzees and Z-Bones dental chews are 10% off. Other specials: Nature’s Variety kibble - $3 off per bag (coupons in-store on the bags) Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Pet - $3 off (coupons in-store) Pillow beds (in the big boxes in the front of the store)  40% off Great Life kibble - $5 off 7 lb. bag, $10 off 25 lb bag (claim coupon at register) New products: [...]

January Newsletter

Tripe! If I ever start thinking my dogs are people, all I need to do is dish up some tripe to be reminded that, oh yeah, dogs are definitely a different species! The smell and look of tripe is repugnant to most people, but it’s glee-inducing to every dog I’ve ever met. Not only do dogs love it, it is also very good for them. This month I’m here to educate you, and entice you to feed your dog some tripe. Take this opportunity to let your dog try some tripe this month! Mention or show this newsletter at the register and receive 20% off any tripe product we have (coupon good through January 31st). What is Tripe? The beneficial form of tripe is called “green” tripe. It is the stomach of a ruminant animal (cow, deer, buffalo, sheep) that has not been processed or bleached (other than basic cleaning). This is NOT the bleached tripe that is sold as people food (although why any human being would eat it is a mystery to me). Benefits of Tripe Healthy skin and shiny coat Bright eyes Alert mind Confident and good-natured temperament (yes, it has even been shown to have beneficial effect on the temperament) Proper growth for puppies Energy and longer active life for senior dogs Cleaner Teeth (especially if fed rough-cut raw tripe) Improved muscle tone Improved digestion Attractive even to finicky dogs Well tolerated by dogs with allergies and sensitivities to other foods (even beef) Why Use Tripe? Because it naturally contains: Calcium:phosphorus ratio 1:1 Linoleic and linolenic fatty acids Taurine and other amino acids Vitamins and minerals Lactobacillus acidophilus (probiotic) Digestive enzymes Downside of Tripe There is one downside of tripe: in [...]
