We just discovered that WellPet (makers of Wellness brand foods and treats) have started sourcing some preservative ingredients (green tea extract and mixed tocopherols) in China. Because of this, we have decided to discontinue those products. The Pure Rewards and Wellbites that are on the shelf are the old recipe. They won’t be replaced. We are sorry to have to do this, and we’ve told WellPet that. Wellness canned food will remain. The dry food and treats are out until they modify their recipes to stop using ingredients from China.
If you currently feed your dog any WellPet products, please stop by the store and we can help you pick out alternatives.
Reading this blog entry has persuaded me to trust your company. I have long believed that Chinese merchants don’t care about the health of our dogs and it’s a mistake to get ingredients from that source. I am remembering the story of the antifreeze that was in dog food that killed many beloved pets. Because our court system will not fuss over the value of our pets when they die from tainted or poisonous products, protective efforts by a pet product supplier is very important to me.
You do realize that any pet food with a vitamin premix more than likely has at least 1 Chinese ingredient in it. It can’t be helped. We are a global world! Companies can claim they source from countries other than China, but that doesn’t stop those country suppliers from purchasing ingredients from China but selling from their country and thus “nothing from China” can be claimed. I don’t feed Wellness nor do I work for them. Thanks.
I started feeding my dogs Nulo and after contacting the company asking where the vitamins come from , the told me CHINA! Looking for different food ASAP!!!
I just ran across your website and I’m looking for a new limited diet kipple and soft food for my 14 year old shitzu poodle mix. We are using natural balance limited diet now and I have just learned this may be a bad product for my dog. We live in Atlanta Ga. Thank you so much for your help
Good for you! Nice to see a company take a stand for our dogs. I have bought Wellness in the past for my dog who recently died from kidney disease and pancreatitis. I don’t know if the Wellness food was the cause but it is known that excess Vitamin D causes renal failure.
Sorry for the lost of your pet. My dog also passed of kidney failure . I was feeding him the wellness food also.
Ok let me get this straight, I feed my 14 yr old shitzu (wellness core) and wellness puts ingredients in the sog food they know is made in China? What so you recommend, small breed hard food.
Thank you for your post. I was looking to replace my labradors food from Nutro to Wellness Core. We recently had an issue with Nutro making our Labrador have a bad stomach; vomiting and diarrhea. Can you suggest a another brand?
I know this is old,but it turns out you were way ahead on this. You would have thought we would have learned from the 2007 melamine incident. And also the fact that Chinese companies were willing to sell formula that poisoned their own babies You think they care about our pets?! Wondering if the FDA cares either…they’ve had plenty of chances to enforce real quality standards and have refused.
